I had been over weight all of my life. When I was in my 30's and again in my 50's I was able to loose around 80 lbs the conventional way. When I got heavy again in my 60's I found it very difficult to do the exercise piece of loosing weight and I felt like there wasn't much I could do to loose the weight. I found my health issue piling up, as I got older. At 64 I found my self with blood pressure, cholesterol, heart arrhythmia, thyroid, asthma, I had one knee replaced and was look at a 2nd knee replacement, sleep apnea, and the final straw was when my doctor told me I has borderline diabetic and we needed to start treating that as well. Well that was not going to happen, I was too cowardly to stick a needle in myself for the rest of my life and I knew I needed to do something about my life. I was worried about the impact that my weight would have on me, as I got older. I was afraid the folks at the care center would have to take me to the car wash to give me a shower. I had even wondered if I was going to have to be cremated because there weren't going to be enough relatives to carry my body to my grave. So I talked to some folks in our town that had been banded. I called a surgeon friend of mine and also go advice and he supported my desire to do the band. I talked to five of them; it had works for four of the five. Some had been banded in Mexico and a couple in Utah. My first plan was to have the operation in Utah. I had letters from my GP and my orthopedic Surgeon telling my insurance company that I needed the operation. They would not pay for it. We appealed the rejection and they would not pay for it in Utah. They were willing to pay $40 thousand for another knee and a lifetime of prescription, but not a lap band.

We appealed the rejection and they would not pay for it in Utah. They were willing to pay $40 thousand for another knee and a lifetime of prescription, but not a lap band.

So I knew I would need to go to Mexico. I set up an appointment to have the band done and was a bit frightened about going “to Mexico” to have surgery. One of our local doctors went to Dr. Kuri’s and actually went into the surgery with a patient of his that was being banded. When they returned to Utah he called me and told me about his experience and he lay to rest any concerns I might have had. He said, don’t worry about a thing, the surgical team is like watching a ballet, they have done it so many time they all know what they are doing. The hospital is wonderful, the surgery suit is modern, the equipment excellent, everything is appropriate, state of the art, and equal to standards in the USA. When I headed to Mexico I was comfortable with my decision.

I had an excellent experience with the band. I lost 120 lbs. in less than a year. I have been able to keep that weight at that place for nearly two years. I weighted 293 when Contacted Dr. Kuri, I lost 13 lbs on the liver shrinking diet before I went down there. I now weigh 170. The best part of this is the health benefits. I am still taking thyroid and a reduced dose of cholesterol. Every other health issue had disappeared. No more drugs, no Cpap masks, no knee surgery, no leg or feet problems, and best of all, no needles. The only thing that has not gotten better is my golf game. Well actually it has. I love being able to move, I am happier and healthier than I have ever been.

Two of my doctor friend here in Vernal went down after I did and have had the procedure done on them selves. They both spend a couple of days in Mexico and spend several hours in the operating room watching the Kuri team in action. They were trained and now I can get Kuri approved fill in my hometown. The one doctor took members of her family don there as well. I don’t think money was an issue for a doctor like it was for me, they have the greatest respect for Dr. Kuri and the work he does.

I have followed to protocols that I received for the lap band. I do the diet as out lined. I have found great joy in exercise. I work out at the gym three times a week; I walk every morning and afternoon. I love how I feel after I have worked out. I am so happy I make with decision and that the band gave me a tool to do the work and find freedom and health. I appreciate the health and support I got from my facilitator JoAnn Jackson. I liked Dr. Kuri the minute I met him and felt he really cared about helping people find a healthy way to live.

A Message from Dr. and Mrs. Kuri

Maria and I wanted to take a moment to thank all the Bandsters for choosing Dr. Kuri & Associates and for those that have had the opportunity to join us at the Bandster Bash. Maria and I have cherished the memories celebrating and supporting our patients by putting on the Bandster Bash. These celebrations have allowed me, my family and my staff, the unique opportunity to get to know my patients better and support their efforts to a healthier life with the Lap Band.

For the past eleven years we have strived to improve the support and education that we provide to our patients during the Bandster celebration. We continue to find new and innovative ways to connect to our patient to support their success.

However, Maria and I felt it was important to inform our patients that due to logistics and scheduling issues, the decision was made that the Bandster Bash will not be held this year. We hope that you will continue to join us in the future as we continue to celebrate patient success.

Since the introduction of the Lap-Band® system, Dr. Pedro Kuri has performed more Lap-Band® Surgeries than any other surgeon in the world.

Since the introduction of the Lap-Band system, Dr. Pedro Kuri has performed more Lap-Band Surgeries than any other surgeon in the world. There are medical groups that have collectively performed more procedures than Dr. Kuri. However, no single surgeon has performed more Lap-Band Surgeries to date.

Dr. Kuri has been performing the Lap-Band procedure before the FDA approved its use in the states. Due to this fact, Dr. Kuri often has much more experience than U.S. Doctors. Since the Lap-Band was approved by the FDA in 2001, many people have undergone this type of weight loss surgery for morbid obesity. However, it wasn’t until recently this year that the FDA lowered the BMI requirements for patients with a BMI level of between 30 to 40. Subsequently more people then ever are now eligible for surgery. Due to the strict requirements of the FDA, many U.S. bariatric surgeons have limited or no experience with the Lap-Band. Now that many of the restrictions have been lifted by the FDA and insurance carriers are beginning to cover the procedure, many less experienced surgeons are taking the opportunity to cash in.

Recent news confirms how important it is to consider the reputation, experience and integrity, of the surgeon you choose, rather than on price alone. Billboards along the countries highways have lured some patients into surgery with less qualified surgeons with devastating results. Reports recently surfaced that Lap-Band surgeons affiliated with the 1-800-GET-THIN advertising campaign in Beverly Hills were criticized as having sub standard facilities and directed to improve their clinic or be forced to shut down. One would assume that a clinic in Beverly Hills of all places would have a good reputation due to its location and high-end clientelle. However, perception is often not the reality and there are inadequate professionals in every field. One of the most important factors in choosing a surgeon is experience and training. Dr Kuri has shown time and time again over the years that he is a dedicated, well-trained, and extremely proficient surgeon of the Lap-Band system.

Often people assume that if a physician is trained in the U.S. they are automatically a superior doctor. However, some of the best surgeons in the world are foreign born and trained. Many of these foreign doctors often go to medical school abroad and later practice in the U.S. Currently there are over 9,500 foreign doctors practicing in the U.S. The training and experience Dr. Kuri brings to the table as a surgeon of 30 years, performing nearly 5,000 Lap-Band procedures in the past 11 years – highly distinguishes himself from other surgeons in his field.

Dr. Kuri understands and speaks english fluently, which enables him to answer any and all questions a patient may have and to clearly understand a patient’s needs. His love and dedication to his patients is unparalleled, and apparent to all know him. Dr. Kuri treats his patients with love, dignity, and respect. Annually Dr. Kuri invites all of his patients back to Mexico to celebrate their success at the annual Kuri Bandster Bash.

Dr Kuri is always available to his patients. If the office is closed, phone calls are forwarded to his personal cell phone. Our patients are always amazed that they can speak directly with Dr. Kuri even if he is out of the office. This kind of personal access to a physician is very uncommon.

Dr. Kuri has a large team of support staff available to his patients including patient facilitators, on-site office personnel, and a patient education coordinator. He also provides a online patient forum to support his patients after care, education, and to further their success along every step of their journey. In addition, Dr. Kuri works with a number of outside service providers to provide his patients with resources and information, including local fill providers.

In this article, we would like to address some of the current issues the country is confronting while at the same time dispel some of the myths the media often exaggerates beyond the true reality of the situation in Mexico.

Violence in Mexico has been the topic of many disturbing news headlines in the past couple of years as a result of feuding between members of the drug trade. Here at Dr. Kuri & Associates, your safety and security is of the utmost importance to us. In this article, we would like to address some of the current issues the country is confronting while at the same time dispel some of the myths the media often exaggerates beyond the true reality of the situation in Mexico.

Mexico often gets a bad rap for its constant appearance in the news for drugs, violence and issues of illegal immigration. While these are certainly true problems Mexico is facing, their occurrence is often inflated by the media. Statistically, the true population most at risk for coming in contact with these types of crimes are Mexicans themselves, and more commonly individuals involved in the drug trade. Tourists are very rarely the target of violent crimes in Mexico.

Where are the Majority of Crimes Occuring in Mexico and Why?
Also at issue is the primary areas where these types of crimes tend to happen. The majority of the crimes perpetrated in Mexico occur in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, located along the Texas-American border. Juarez in recent years has become a hot bed for drug violence and feuding between drug lords. Tijuana, Mexico bordering San Diego, California where Dr. Kuri & Associates office is located has a much lower incidence of violence and crime. By in large, the majority of news media reports coming from Mexico occur in Juarez. These types of reports give the impression that the entire country of Mexico is experiencing violent crimes everywhere. However, the majority of crimes are in-fact occurring in isolated areas. Reports on violence state that less than 5 percent of Mexico is affected by cartel and drug violence. Out of roughly 2,500 municipalities, only 80 are currently recording problems with drug violence.

Who is Traveling to Mexico, and Why?
Over 20 million people visit Mexico each year with no problems at all. In fact, a large majority of travelers to Mexico are often people seeking medical treatment termed “Medical Tourism”. It is estimated that approximately 500,000 to 750,000 Americans traveled to Mexico in 2007. Estimates for 2011 are approximated at 1.2 million by year end.

Why are people traveling to Mexico for Medical Treatment?
Mexico’s proximity to the United States and the relatively low travel costs, has made it a popular travel destination for Americans and Canadians seeking medical treatment to save money. Global health care costs are increasingly on the rise, leaving many individuals uninsured or underinsured seeking medical alternatives outside their native countries. The world health organization ranks Mexico’s health care system 61st in the world with the United States ranked 37th making hospitals in Mexico very similar in quality and care to those in the U.S. The highest ranked countries in the world are primarily western European countries where social medicine systems dominate the playing field. However, more and more developed countries are moving towards social medicine which consequently raises the standard of care all around the world. Until the world transitions to a social healthcare system, many will continue to seek high quality alternatives in other countries.

How safe does Dr. Kuri make traveling to Mexico for his patients?
From the moment you arrive at the U.S. Mexico border, you are greeted by our private driver who chaperones you in our private vehicle across the border directly to Hospital Angeles. Hospital Angeles is conveniently located minutes across the border. You will literally arrive at Hospital Angeles minutes after crossing the U.S. border. Throughout your entire stay with us, private transportation is provided the entire time at no cost.

Have any of Dr. Kuri’s patients ever experienced a problem traveling to Mexico for the Lap-Band?
In our 11 year history, we have never had a patient ever experience any problems while traveling to and from Hospital Angeles in Tijuana, Mexico.
We go over why there are several differences in the prices of Lap-Band surgery. Price can be a deciding factor for many, but it's important to remember that safety and health should be at the top of your list.

If you are considering having Lap Band Surgery in Mexico and doing research on the internet, you may have noticed a wide range of prices advertised by surgeons in Mexico. There are a variety of reasons for the disparity in prices. Many of which are very important to your health, overall success with the Lap-Band, and will affect your post operative experience. For many people, price is a deciding factor when choosing a Lap-Band® Surgeon. However, your health and safety should be at the top of your list. We encourage you to consider all of the factors listed below when choosing a surgeon in Mexico.

Why is the kind of Band used important?
When Dr. Kuri performs a Lap Band Surgery, he uses a FDA approved Allergan Band®. Allergan is the leading manufacturer of its trademarked Lap-Band® and Lap-Band System® and is the industry standard band in the U.S. and around the world. This band has been tried and tested in thousands of patients since its FDA approval in 2001. Many other doctors in Mexico use knock-off bands that are often not FDA approved. This is how many doctors get away with charging as little as $3,000 for surgery. When you use a non FDA approved band you run the risk of band slippage, erosion, band failure, other serious complications, and even death.

Receiving Fills in the U.S. After Lap-Band® Surgery
After surgery you will need to schedule “fills” as you begin to lose weight. Dr. Kuri & Associates has established relationships with many doctors all over the U.S. to assist you with your fills. If you have a non FDA approved Band physicians in the U.S. will not assist you with your fills. The reason being is a U.S. physician could be liable for any complications caused by your non FDA approved band. In cases such as these, you may need to travel back to Mexico to have your fills done by your operating surgeon.

What type of Medical Facility should I expect in Mexico when having Lap Band Surgery?
Doctors in Mexico perform Lap Band Surgery in a variety of types of medical facilities. The most common type is an outpatient clinic which houses a surgery room and staff. Facilities such as these are often ill equipped and staffed in the event of a complication. Many physicians get by charging very low rates for surgery because they operate in sub standard facilities. Patients that choose these types of centers for surgery run the risk of serious effects to their health.

Dr. Kuri however performs all of his surgeries at a state of the art medical hospital called Hospital Angeles. The differences between an outpatient clinic and a fully staffed modern hospital are tremendous. Hospital Angeles is new hospital funded by 70 million U.S. dollars and is part of Grupo Angeles, the largest private hospital chain in Mexico. In less than twenty years the Angeles HealthCare Group has developed the most advanced private hospital service in the country, with 14 thriving centers to date. The very first surgery performed at the Hospital Angeles was a Lap-Band® procedure by Dr. Kuri and his surgical team. The hospital features state-of-the-art medical and surgical equipment and diagnostic services for all specialties and is fully equipped for any emergency.

How much should I expect to pay for Lap Band Surgery in Mexico?
The average range for Lap Band Surgery with a reputable surgeon in Mexico is between $6,000 to $10,000 U.S. dollars. Surgeons advertising rates lower than these levels are operating in small clinics with little to no medical staff, using non approved FDA bands. Dr. Kuri is competitively priced, and under priced when considering his level of quality and expertise. It is important to remember that doctors will do anything to get a booked surgery, including lowering their price. But, don’t be fooled. This often means your aftercare has been cut and they are using inferior bands to cut costs. Dr. Kuri only uses the FDA approved Allergan Lap-Band® in all Lap-Band procedures he performs.

The celebrities’ pictures show them before and after they completed the weight loss program. Take a look for yourself and see who did the best out of this group.

Remember that not all weight loss programs work for everyone. When choosing a weight loss plan you need to take into consideration your:

It is important to say that being overweight or out of shape is not only about what we eat. It's about our emotional state of being, how we deal with stress, how fast we process and clear life experiences. It's about how our life is going and how we are dealing and relating to it, both now and in the past. If you are overweight or out of shape, simply ask yourself what are you holding on to, what are the things you feel stuck on?

For many of us, not being happy or satisfied or even disliking our body is a major block to happiness and awareness. Women especially spend a lot of time wishing their body was different in one way or another. We have not only bought into accepted concepts of what is perfect, beautiful and ideal for body shape, we also police ourselves constantly with thoughts and beliefs such as my stomach is too big, my thighs are too fat, my butt sags, and so on. All of this adds up to very destructive behaviors and thought patterns that often seem hard to break. View more on this topic on the forum

Despite the seemingly endless information out there, losing weight still seems like a mysterious process. We know it's fundamentally about burning more calories than we eat, and most of us have the physical tools we need to make it happen: getting in our workouts and watching our diets. Weight loss, though, is about much more than that.

Weight Loss Reality Check
Every choice you make each day, whether to exercise or not, whether to have the grilled chicken or go for the burger, whether to watch TV or go for a walk, will determine whether you lose weight, stay where you are or even gain more weight. So what do you need to make those good choices day after day? Below are some basic survival skills you need to stay on the weight loss track. View more on this topic on the forum.

The Party Isn’t Over When You Get Healthy
Are you annoyed by people who seem to enjoy exercise? What about people who eat healthfully with little effort? Why is it so easy for them and such a struggle for you? Is Your Hunger GPS Turned Off?
We are each born with an internal “GPS”Driving that guides us to eat when we’re hungry, stop when we’re full, eat what we love, and love what we eat – without thinking about food constantly in between. View more on this topic on the forum.

Six Weeks to a Healthier Diet
Eating healthy foods really isn’t a diet in the way we think of weight loss diets and fad diets, it’s the foods you eat. Your diet is just one part of your lifestyle. Unfortunately many people don’t eat healthy foods, and eating an unhealthy diet leads to weight gain, chronic disease and just feeling lousy.

If you don’t think your diet is on the right track, this six-week course will help you take the steps to turn your not-so-healthy diet around. You’re going to take this slowly, one step at a time, so that each step becomes a way of life. Each weeks lesson features just one step to focus on. After each week, you will then be one step closer to your goal, whether it is to lose weight, gain weight, or improve your health. Then, down the road, if your old bad eating habits come back, you can take the course over again, just to brush up your healthy eating skills.

Benefits of Eating Slowly
In certain countries and cultures, a meal can last for hours. People sit around a table, whole extended families gathered, and they talk, eat and drink late into the evening. In the U.S., that just doesn’t happen anymore. The average meal is 11 minutes long – with some breakfasts and lunches lasting barely 2 minutes.

But is eating fast a problem? Should we be concerned? The answer is “yes” and here are some of the reasons you (and me, and everyone) should eat more slowly. View more on this topic on the forum.

Weekend Diet Traps
Question: I eat a healthy diet Monday through Friday, but on the weekends, it’s no holds barred. How do I bring in the reins?

Answer: After working hard all week, you are ready for some rest and relaxation — and that mindset seems to also extend to your diet. You start with cocktails and greasy appetizers Friday night with friends. On Saturday, you go grazing through the food court while shopping at the mall, then go out for a big dinner that night. On Sunday, you are feeling kind of lazy and lounge around on the couch watching television and snacking on chips and dip.
This is a pretty common scenario. But don’t despair. With a little thought and preparation, you can continue to eat healthy and still enjoy your weekends. Here are some tips. View more on this topic on the forum.

The Woes of Dieting
Millions of Americans are either on a diet or will start one at some point in their life. Weight loss and health are the primary motivators. Let’s peruse some of the issues that dieters must face. View more on this topic on the forum.

Health Benefits of Cinnamon
Cinnamon…common, comforting. Who would have thought it could be so good for you? Would you believe that a mere teaspoon of cinnamon contains 28 mg of calcium, almost one mg of iron, over a gram of fiber, and quite a lot of vitamins C, K, and manganese? It’s true. It also contains about half a gram of “usable” (non-fiber) carbohydrate. View more on this topic on the forum.

5 Tips for Low-sodium Cooking
Spice Things Up
Let’s face it: Low-sodium dishes can be tasteless — especially when you’re addicted to salt. We instinctively turn to the table salt as an easy antidote to bland food. However, if you’re willing to be a little creative and open to other flavors, you’ll find countless ways to spice up your meals. You’ll soon wean yourself off of the salt-shaker and may even discover new favorite seasonings and flavors.

Low Fat Pear-Cranberry Strudel
This pear-cranberry strudel makes a great holiday or weeknight dessert. The beauty of phyllo, or filo, dough is that it’s low fat, has no saturated or trans fat, and no cholesterol, making it a terrific alternative to regular pastry. It’s light, crisp and flaky, and so long as you use butter-flavored cooking spray between layers rather than real melted butter, it’s a perfect low fat choice for pies, tarts and, of course, strudels.
If you’re trying lose weight and make exercise a habit, you may be surprised to learn that there’s not much difference between you and people who exercise regularly. There’s no magic pill that brings discipline and motivation to your workouts. So what do they have that you don’t have? It’s all in the way you think and how you act. View more on this topic on the forum.

Getting Back on Track with Exercise
It would be so much easier to exercise every day if life just cooperated a little more. But, most of us will face times when we can’t exercise and even the most devoted exerciser will eventually have to abandon his workout routine for any number of reasons. Illness, moving, having a baby, getting married, out-of-town guests…these things and more will happen at some point and, as a result you may find your exercise routine going right out the window. The trick isn’t necessarily in avoiding these situations but in learning how to keep going in spite of them. View more on this topic on the forum.

How to Think Like an Exerciser
What you think makes a difference in how you live
If you’re trying to lose weight or stick to a consistent exercise program, what you may notice is how many things stand in the way of your goals. What you may not realize is that fitting in exercise is a matter of how you think and not what’s on your schedule. Thinking like an exerciser can increase your odds of success and put you in the right frame of mind for making the choice to exercise. View more on this topic on the forum.

Ten Mistakes to Avoid When Building Muscle and Losing Fat
Everyone wants to build muscle and lose fat: that’s pretty much the Holy Grail of weight training and physical conditioning. But can it be done? The body does not like to perform two contradictory physiological processes at the same time. Your body has evolved to either increase fat, muscle (and bone) in times of plenty, and, as you might imagine, do just the opposite in scarce times when food availability is low.
To get a nice looking body, say six-pack abs, you need to hold onto or increase muscle while shedding loads of fat. That’s the problem targeted in this list of ten mistakes to avoid when trying to accomplish this. View more on this topic on the forum.

Making Your New Year’s Resolutions
I love a new year. It almost seems like we can start all over, finally become that wonderful, productive, healthy, happy person we’ve always wanted to be. The trouble is, the enthusiasm to make changes, especially with exercise and diet, tends to fade once we realize we can’t change everything overnight. If you want to make lasting changes, there are three things you can do to make your resolutions work all year long: Adjust your attitude, change your lifestyle and come up with a plan for success. View more on this topic on the forum.

New Years Resolutions or Results?
On January 1st, millions of people set their hopes high with a resolution to lose weight. I hope you weren’t one of them.

You may be thinking, “What?!!! Of course I was – it’s a tradition. I resolve to lose weight every year!”

Let me clarify. Losing weight is NOT a resolution, it is a RESULT. It is the result of specific changes in the way you eat, move, and live. So this year, instead of setting a goal to lose an arbitrary number of pounds, inches, or clothing sizes, resolve to think differently about eating, physical activity, and living. View more on this topic on the forum.

The beginning of my story is like many, an obese child, losing and gaining always a bit more each time followed by self hatred and despair. I gave up for years and just maintained my fat. Then I started gaining and getting scared about my health. Out of desperation I started looking into gastric bypass surgery. I was denied at first, of course, and then accepted finally after 2 years of struggle, 2 sets of pre-op tests and 2 psych evaluations. As I was setting the final appointment for surgery (I even got the surgeon I wanted) they asked me for a copy of my new insurance card. I sent them a copy and at the 11th hour I was told they couldn’t go through with it as my new insurance wouldn’t cover the surgery. The company I worked for went self insured, there was some dishonesty with the insurance company about what plan we really had. With no one to help me, I fought the insurance company, consulted an attorney and was a monster to work with I was so angry and devastated.

Looking back I feel blessed and almost divinely guided. I began searching options and discovered Dr. Kuri. I said to myself “this is my life and no one is going to stop me from getting well!”

I came to Mexico alone, it seemed I need to make this journey on my own it was so deeply personal for me. I guess I didn’t want to share or was afraid someone or something would get in my way.

Now, 2 ½ years later I have lost 123lbs., wear a size 8, take no more medications and have my health and life back. I realized this is not a journey you can see going forward because none of us are sure we will reach our destination after so many failures but rather a journey that looking back from where we started we can see how far we have come. It is a step at a time, a small little change bit by bit and suddenly standing in our mirror is that person we wondered if we would ever see again. An voila! There we are.

Who is the magician that cast this spell? A kind, brilliant, skilled and caring doctor named Kuri (let’s not forget handsome) that said “I will give you the tool, you must do the work.” In my willingness to follow the doctor and do the work I found myself.
