An intra-gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon that is implanted down your throat into your stomach with an endoscope. The balloon is then inflated with a saline solution – thereby reducing the stomachs consumption capacity.

Dr Kuri has been performing the Intra-Gastric Balloon procedure for many years prior to the recent approval by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Patients from the United States are now eligible for the Intra-Gastric Balloon procedure. Dr Kuri performs all surgeries himself accompanied by his surgical staff.

Minimally Invasive Surgical Alternative

The Intragastric Balloon is a great option for patients not wanting to undergo major surgery for weight loss. * Results may vary. It uses the same concept as other gastric bypass procedures by limiting the amount of intake into the stomach. The major benefit to the Intragastric Balloon is it is reverisble, incision-free, safe, and affordable. The procedure itself takes approximately 30-45 minutes and can remain in the stomach for up to 6 months.

How does the Intra-Gastric Balloon help you to lose weight?

The intragastric balloon is inflated with liquid in the stomach, thus reducing the overall capacity of the stomach to consume food. Patients often have the sensation of being full after small meals, which subsequently leads to weight loss over time.  * Results may vary. This type technique is known as restrictive bariatrics. Since the stomachs capacity to consume food is reduced, it allows the patient to feel fuller faster – subsequently leading to weight loss. * Results may vary.

Are you a candidate?

The Gastric Balloon is an attractive alternative for those with lower BMI’s. Often many bariatric surgeons require patients to have BMI’s of 35 to 40 to undergo surgery. Patients with a BMI as low as 30 can undergo the gastric balloon procedure.

Patients with very high BMI’s may also benefit from the Gastric Balloon. Often surgeons fear drastic bariatric surgeries with morbidly obese patients due to the higher risk of mortality in this group. Many physicians will recommend a less invasive surgical alternative such as the gastric balloon in effort to help the patient lose weight – while planning more aggressive methods later on.

What kind of weight loss results should I expect with the Gastric Balloon?

Recent studies have found that patients can lose up to 40% of their excess body weight after 6 months with the Gastric Balloon. * Results may vary.
